Does the use of Native American names and images honor or degrade Native American culture?

Many Americans object to the use of Native American names for sports teams and/or mascots. They believe this does not show proper respect for the Native American culture or heritage.  An example of this is the local professional football team, the Washington Redskins.

You will analyze various newspaper and magazine articles, research an American Indian tribe, write a one page report and create a Power Point presentation about your chosen tribe. After conducting your research and presenting your findings, you will decide whether you believe professional and/ or school teams should use Native American names for their team names or mascots. You will then write a letter to the owner of the Washington Redskins, making a recommendation about the future of the team's name and mascot.
