Many Native Americans object to the use of Native American names for sports teams and/or mascots. They believe this does not show proper respect for the Native American culture or heritage. Others believe these names honor Native American heritage. An example of this is the local professional football team, the Washington Redskins. In January 2002 the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments requested the team change its name. The team has no plans to change its name and states that the team has always portrayed Native Americans in an honorable fashion.

Based on your research and prior knowledge, decide whether you believe the Washington Redskins should change their name and team logo. Write a letter to the owner of the Washington Redskins, Daniel Synder persuading what action(s) he should take regarding the future of the team’s name.
