1) Germany is in a mess in the middle of Great
Depression – Money becomes DEVALUED, or almost worthless. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Germany couldn’t make reparations payments, and
France and Belgium take over a German industrial town on the border. Hitler
will use these incidents to drive German people toward expansion and war. |
|
|
|
|
Adolf Hitler takes power as Nazis begins to win
more seats in German Parliament.
He talked President Hindenburg into naming him Chancellor, with a cabinet
of 9 to assist, but only 3 of them are Nazis. Nazis burned down the
Reichstag building weeks later, just before a national election. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
MILITARY – They backed him because he promised
to rip up the treaty of Versailles and allow them to expand |
|
BUSINESS – They figured he’d be good for the
economy, plus easy to control as Nazi Party didn’t have many members of
Reichstag or Cabinet |
|
REICHSTAG: Members thought they could remove him
if needed |
|
|
|
|
Hitler demanded Sudentenland from Czechoslavakia
for German expansion, since people there spoke German. |
|
British Prime Minister Chamberlain agreed to
plan, as long as Hitler didn’t make any more demands |
|
Plan didn’t last Hitler soon took over most of
Eastern Europe |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Hitler took control of Czechoslovakia, Poland
and Austria by 1939. In 1940, he will invade and capture France, and begin
his attempt to overtake Britain. By the time the U.S. joins the war in
Europe in 1942, Germany controls almost 2/3 of the continent and is
fighting USSR for complete dominance |
